The question isn’t if Google can stay the biggest and most influential Search Engine in the World - it’s much more the hope and fear of another player becoming the love of all users on the net. Facebook does have the potential already. Sure more than 2 Billion ppl are using Google, most probably, a couple of times every day but Facebook has more than 200 Million registered and mostly active users worldwide. Of course 200 Mil User are not 2 Billion searches and of course not billions and billions of dollars every month, but at the end the users do have the power to change things on the internet.
Even if Google is and will be the source for a lot of v. interesting and helpful tools like Gmail, Earth, Maps, Android and Search - Facebook has the potential to grow quicker and closer to the user than Google. Thanks to Facebook connect and the possibility for everybody to create Applications based on the Facebook platform it gives every company to connect to the social history of its users and enables its users to express themselves even more and more individual.
Another benefit of Facebook is the hugh amount of information they have on their users. I don’ know the number but i doubt that Google has the data of 200 Millione Users worldwide from their age, gender, favorite cities, hobbies, friends, circles and many more.
The fight, at the end, will not be about who is making the most money out of every user and/or search query. It’s about who is loved more by every single consumer on the planet. Google still has the advantage of size and backoffice as well as ideas but Facebook is keeping up well - of course less organized but a real thread to the big G.
If Facebook or even - the crazy - Twitter phenomenon can make it to be the new entry page for up to 500 Mil users, Google will really suffer. Facebook is on the way and if you watch your friends using it .. its pretty clear that Facebook gets more attention by heart than Google does these days. Its the jackpot - on a long term - to be the connection for each user between friends and family. That gives you a even more emotional brand than Google, the white knight of the Internet, has till now.
So it will stay very interesting on the net for the next couple of month and years. Sometimes i would love to fast forward and see how we use the net in lets say 5 and 10 years
Until than .. keep reading and thanks for following me.
